Comprehensive Consideration of a Career Change

Looking to transition into a new industry or company can bring many doubts and worries as you consider this big change. However, if you’re looking for minor financial relief or better work-life balance, it can be worth it. In fact, according to the Federal Reserve in 2025, 60% of people who changed jobs said their new job was better. To prepare for a big career change, there are many things to evaluate that encompass both your financial situation and your quality of life.

Pay Comparison

The potential of a new job comes with the possibility of new income or better career advancement opportunities. With that in mind, it's important to compare the new job offer and your current employment situation.

Two important things to consider:

Pay Cuts

For some people, a pay cut may be required as a temporary solution due to other variables. This can result from starting an entry-level position, gaining necessary experience or needing more time to complete additional education. If you've made the necessary preparations, this can be a manageable choice.

Three things to consider:

Benefit Changes

As important as it is to consider the potential pay for a new job offer, it's equally important to consider any potential changes to your benefits package. As each industry holds its own standard of what's offered when it comes to benefits, there's no guarantee your benefits will stay the same as you shift into a new role with a new company. To prepare, try comparing current medical, dental and vision insurance premium costs that are deducted from your paychecks. You may also account for paid time off accruals, retirement account savings, life insurance and disability, tuition reimbursement, and any other benefits offered by your current employer. This can become a financial burden if you are looking to transition to a company that offers you more income but requires you to pay more in insurance coverage.

Employment Expenses

A change to your career can also affect your working hours, increase your commute time, or even include relocation to a more expensive area. With these small changes to your daily work routine, there can be an impact on your monthly spending.

Three things to consider:

Exit Strategy

Prior to leaving your current place of employment, it may be helpful to develop a plan for managing your funds during that transitional period. Some people may experience a gap in income before starting their new position, so developing a clear strategy can avoid rushed decisions and turning to credit cards or other forms of debt to supplement lost income. This strategy can include back-up plans for if your original plan falls through, as well as building a safety net savings to use during any transitions. Review any of your current obligations and think about how you plan to cover those costs between your last and first paychecks. You can also protect your retirement contributions and insurance coverage by transferring retirement funds to a new account and reviewing deadlines and options for continuing health coverage past your last day of employment.

The decision to change careers can feel overwhelming, but with the right steps put in place, it can become an opportunity for you to improve your career growth, overall financial well-being and establish a better work-life balance. By assessing income, comparing company benefits, preparing for likely expenses and establishing a financial safety net, you can make better-informed decisions for next steps. Making the time to create a practical budget and exit strategy can help you navigate the career transition period and set yourself up for long-term success.
